Greengate Atelier teaches drawing and painting on Sydney’s North Shore, from our studio on Greengate Road in Killara. Choose a one-on-one lesson, a small group, a children’s term, or a guided event. Every class is taught in the atelier tradition, from the fundamentals up, for beginners and experienced artists alike.

One-on-One Private Lesson

Undivided attention, tailored to whatever you want to learn, from pencil and pastel to oil and acrylic. Beginners and working artists alike.

How lessons work

  • Bring your own materials

    Students supply their own paint, canvas, brushes and paper for lessons. New to it? Ask us and we will send a simple starter list.

  • Beginner to advanced

    We teach the fundamentals first, then build from there, whether it is your first lesson or your hundredth.

  • Children and adults

    A calm room for young artists, and serious instruction for grown-ups. Often in the same week.

  • Events up to twenty

    Birthdays, Paint n' Sip evenings, and corporate gatherings. Tell us the occasion and we will shape the night.

Frequently asked

  • Do I need any experience to start?

    No. We teach complete beginners alongside working artists, starting from the fundamentals and building from there. Every lesson is paced to you.

  • What ages do you teach?

    Children and adults. The Children’s Creativity Studio runs as a ten-session term for younger artists, and our private, small-group, and specialty classes suit teens and adults at any level.

  • Where is the studio?

    On Greengate Road in Killara, on Sydney’s North Shore. We draw students from across the area, including Lindfield, Roseville, Gordon, Pymble, Turramurra, St Ives, and Wahroonga.

  • How long is a lesson?

    Most private and small-group lessons run two hours. The Children’s Creativity Studio is a ten-session term so young artists can build skills steadily over time.

  • What will I learn?

    Drawing and painting across pencil, pen, pastel, oil, and acrylic. We cover the fundamentals first, then portraiture, colour, and composition, whatever you most want to develop.

  • Do I need to bring my own materials?

    For lessons, yes. Students bring their own paint, canvas, brushes, and paper. Not sure what to buy? Ask us and we will send a simple list to suit your class. For Paint n’ Sip evenings and private events, everything is provided.

  • Do you teach one-on-one?

    Yes. Private lessons give you undivided attention, tailored to exactly what you want to learn. Small-group lessons of three to five people are also available.

  • Can you host a birthday or group event?

    Yes. We run Paint n’ Sip evenings, birthdays, and corporate gatherings for up to twenty guests. Tell us the occasion and we will shape the session around it.

  • How do I book a class?

    Lessons and events run by appointment. Call, email, or message us on Instagram and we will find a time that suits you.
